Equity vs Equality
When I launched my Girls Academy two years ago, I faced some pretty harsh pushback.
❌ “Where’s the men’s-only program?”
❌ “You aren’t going to become one of those man-hating women, are you?”
❌ “So incredibly diverse…”
❌ “Why do girls need their own program? Just put them in with the boys.”
❌ “So, you’re a feminist now?”
These are actual comments I’ve received—ones that, unfortunately, still come up when talking about girls-only programs in golf. It’s frustrating, but not surprising. The fact that people still question why girls need dedicated spaces in sports is exactly why these programs are necessary. Creating opportunities for girls isn’t about exclusion—it’s about inclusion. It’s about giving them a space where they can develop their skills, build confidence, and thrive in the game—without having to justify their presence.
I think part of the problem is that people confuse equity and equality. Equality means giving everyone the same resources or opportunities. But not everyone starts from the same place. Equity means recognizing different needs and barriers—and providing the right resources so everyone has a fair shot at success.
Equity isn’t about giving girls an unfair advantage. It’s about leveling the playing field so they have the same opportunities that boys have always had. Equity requires a human element—one that acknowledges why someone may need additional support or resources. It’s not just about handing out the same opportunities to everyone; it’s about understanding the barriers that exist and actively working to remove them. It asks:
🔹 What challenges has this person faced?
🔹 What systemic obstacles exist that have made it harder for them to succeed?
🔹 What specific support do they need to reach the same starting line as others?
It’s about recognizing that fairness isn’t one-size-fits-all. It requires thought, intention, and action to ensure everyone has a fair shot at success. It’s about fighting for the kid in a wheelchair to have a ramp so he can watch the soccer game. It’s the foundation in which the Girls Academy was built.
If we truly believe in equality, we must actively work for equity.
The Girls Academy isn’t about taking anything away from boys. It’s about giving girls what they’ve been missing for far too long: a space designed for them, by someone who understands what they need.
